Leadership without ownership turns risk into disaster.

In boardrooms across industries, the same phrase echoes:

“Cybersecurity is important to us.”

But when we follow the money, the decisions, and the accountability – the truth emerges: many leaders, from C-suite to CIO to CISO, are not truly supporting cybersecurity.

And this negligence is expensive.

I’ve seen the consequences first-hand:

  1. Disaster Recovery plans do not exist because no one dared prioritize them
  2. Incident response delayed while teams argue about who’s responsible
  3. Security roles left undefined, leaving chaos during actual attacks
  4. GRC teams side-lined, not due to incompetence, but lack of visible backing

Cybersecurity collapses silently when leaders stay silent. This isn’t just a technical issue. It’s a business failure waiting to happen.

Here’s what’s really at stake:

  1. Financial loss: Fines under NIS2, GDPR, and DORA can reach millions.
  2. Loss of customers: No one trusts a company that can’t protect data.
  3. Reputation damage: Once trust is lost, it’s almost impossible to win back.
  4. Operational disruption: Downtime kills productivity and erodes resilience.
  5. Legal exposure: Leadership is increasingly held accountable – legally.

Three actions leaders must take before it’s too late:

  1. Take ownership of security outcomes. Not just in words, but in decisions. Escalate blockers. Demand results.
  2. Stop delegating responsibility without authority. CISOs cannot lead if they’re not empowered. Responsibility without power is sabotage.
  3. Embed cybersecurity into governance. Cyber risk is business risk. If it’s not part of the strategy, you don’t have one.

If you’re a senior leader and think your team has it under control – ask yourself this:

Would your security team say the same? Because if they’re firefighting without support, the next fire might take your business down.

The consequences of your inaction won’t just hit IT. They’ll hit your bottom line, your reputation – and your job.
